SNICKERDOODLE, UNITED STATES
19TH CENTURY
OTHER NAMES: Snipdoodles or Cinnamon Sugar Cookies [1]
Snickerdoodle is a drop cookie topped with ground cinnamon and sugar. It has a cracked surface and can be crisp or soft. It is listed as one of the most favorite cookies; however its origin is such a mystery.
The name of this cookie, snickerdoodle, has an unclear origin. Some historians suggest that the word ‘snicker’ comes from the Dutch word snekrad, or the German word Schnecke, which both describe a snail-like shape. Some think that it might come from New England because they often have playful, whimsical cookie names. [2]
Invention of Snickerdoodle is also questionable with many theoretical possibilities. According to Food historians they think this cookie was most likely coming from 19th century New England of United States. [3]
